Palaiochora is a small town in Chania regional unit. It is located 77 km south of Chania, on the southwest coast of Crete. The town is set along 11 km of coastline bordering the Libyan Sea. The distance from the nearest port, the port of Souda is 77 km, while the distance from the aeroport of Chania is 85km.
Local attractions include the abundant wild flowers in the spring, the opportunity to see Venetian and Byzantine wall paintings in some of the local churches (those in Anidri and Voutas being particularly impressive), and a museum dedicated to the Acretans in the town itself. The nearby village of Azogires, 5 km away, contains a museum dedicated to the area as well as the, now empty, Monastery of the 99 Holy Fathers and what is claimed to be the largest Evergreen Plane Tree on the Island. Palaiochora is built on the ruins of the ancient city of Kalamydi.
Nature lovers will be glad to know that Palaiochora is the starting point of E1 and E4 long distance walking paths. Both of which offer the opportunity for expenditions to some of Crete’s most beautiful landscapes. Furthermore, the wellknown beaches of Sougia and Elafonisi as well as the gorge of Samargia , are fairly close by car.
